A MESSAGE OF PEACE FROM BALI CINTA DAMAI
(Bali Loves Peace PR 'n' T-ShirtCampaign)

Since the tragedy of the Bali bombings on October 12, 2002, many steps have been taken for the recovery of Bali, by both government and community. Moreover, much assistance [in line with] the Bali recovery programs has flowed in from overseas as well as other provinces of Indonesia.

Plans to attract tourists back to Bali have already been put forth in a macro economic scope by government, specifically tourism officials. Art and cultural events have been planned in line with this macroeconomic scope. One of the campaigns that has been put forth by the community of Bali as a whole (both local and expatriate communities), is the peace and public relations campaign called Bali Cinta Damai (Bali Loves Peace).

The Bali Cinta Damai campaign efforts have included distributing Bali Loves Peace t-shirts, totally free of charge, to tourists as well as community members. The t-shirts, which read "Bali Cinta Damai" and "Bali Loves Peace," also carry a universal peace message with icons of the island of Bali, a heart (symbolizing love), and a peace symbol. The bulk of the 20,250 t-shirts were worn as a symbol of solidarity between various community groups in Bali, on the November 15th Purification Ceremony, or Tawur Agung Pamarisudha Karipubhaya. A Press Conference on November 14, 2002, was organized at MUSRO (Discovery Kartika Plaza), for 200 foreign journalists, to brief them on the Purification Ceremony. An additional 5000 Bali Cinta Damai stickers were also distributed.

The Bali Cinta Damai t-shirts were also distributed to Indonesian communities and "Friends of Bali," residing overseas in New York, San Fransisco, Sydney, Toronto, London and Berlin. On November 15, 2002, Memorials for Bali at the former World Trade Center in New York City, at Presidio Park in San Fransisco, at the Carnivale Music Festival in Sydney, and at the World Travel Mart in London, in conjunction with the Purification Ceremony, were held around the world in sympathy for the Bali tragedy.

Because many requests for the t-shirts were made after the Purification Ceremony by foreign and local tourists alike, t-shirts were distributed at Bandara Ngurah Rai's departure terminal, through Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways, Malaysia Airlines and Lauda Air. These t-shirts acted as a thank-you to those tourists who attended the important Purification Ceremony, which was an essential and highly meaningful event for the island of Bali. Other Bali Cinta Damai efforts have included involvement in a tree planting initiative in Kintamani (were shirts were also distributed), as well as participation and support in overseas events for Bali (Singapore, and upcoming, in Tokyo).

The Bali Cinta Damai campaign was successful in their distribution targets fully supported by Desa Adat Legian Kuta, who collaborated with Bali Cinta Damai to send this essential message of peace out to the world.

Bali Cinta Damai has protected itself with a copyright, and is in the process of informing the public that original Bali Cinta Damai t-shirts can be obtained free of charge through official channels at the Airport, at travel agents, through magazines, and through the official BCD websites (www.balicintadamai.com and www.balilovespeace.com).

This campaign to uplift the image of Bali and to deliver a message of peace to the world, is planned to last one year. On exactly November 15, 2003, Bali Cinta Damai will reprint these peace t-shirts to be worn and distributed one year after the first Purification Ceremony. Bali Cinta Damai hopes to be able to organize a mass prayer where all those wearing Bali Cinta Damai t-shirts will pray simultaneously for peace, to encircle the island of Bali (on its beaches), in a human hand-holding chain. The intention behind this human chain around the island of Bali, is to remember the Purification Ceremony of last year, pay respects to the victims of the tragedy of October 12, 2002, and to pray for the future of the island of Bali.

Bali Cinta Damai also hopes to organize and participate in, a Summer 2003 (August) Peace Festival, in conjunction with an environmental campaign, in order to create a music & arts festival that will become an annual event and reason for tourists to come back to Bali.

The future plans for Bali Cinta Damai are:

  • to print and distribute t-shirts and stickers at most Bali Recovery events, to capture the attention of both international and local media
  • to distribute t-shirts to local and foreign tourists to take home as a memento of peace and Bali
  • to give out the t-shirts free as a bonus or gift with every purchase by tourists that have visited a restaurant, shop or other locations which require economic support

In the space of one year, Bali Cinta Damai hopes to be able to give each tourist that visits Bali an official free t-shirt and sticker, thereby spreading the message of peace even further overseas. These shirts and stickers will only be obtainable from official hotels, travel agents, restaurants, and shops.

In summary, these are the plans of the Bali Cinta Damai campaign, in order to assist the island of Bali in its economic and spiritual recovery. The Bali community hopes that this message of peace will trickle over to the rest of the world, with humanity working together to spread the message that Bali Loves Peace!
